Welcome to Applied Linguistics & Technology at Iowa State
We focus on using technology to investigate real-world problems in which language is a central issue. Our dynamic faculty are recognized world-wide for their teaching and research. Our interests range from computer assisted language learning and systemic functional linguistics to corpus linguistics and natural language processing to advanced pronunciation and assessment design. Our students come from all around the world and find applied linguistics at Iowa State both exciting and practical. We offer four qualifications:
Our MA program in TESL/Applied Linguistics is for those with some teaching experience who intend making a career in the field. Classes thus equip students with marketable skills by encouraging them to specialize in particular areas: CALL, language assessment, ESP, literature, and literacy, all with a focus on the use of instructional technology.
Our PhD program in Applied Linguistics & Technology is a unique combination of classes aimed at those interested in applying technology to the description, teaching, and assessment of language and language learning.
The K-12 ESL Endorsement upgrades qualified Iowa schoolteachers to teach ESL in the Iowa public school system.
The Graduate Certificate in TESL/TEFL is aimed at those with little or no teaching experience wanting to prepare to teach ESL in the private or voluntary sectors or while travelling abroad.
We offer qualified MA and PhD applicants teaching and/or research assistantship opportunities. Use the menu on the left to explore information about our programs, activities, students, and faculty, and download our research poster below.
